WHO prequalifies first Mpox vaccine for adolescents to curb outbreak

The World Health Organization has added the MVA-BN vaccine to its prequalification list, making it the first Mpox vaccine to receive this status. This decision is expected to facilitate timely and increased access to vaccines in communities facing urgent outbreaks, particularly in Africa where a new, more severe strain has been spreading.

Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, has seen a resurgence in several regions, prompting the WHO to declare it a public health emergency of international concern. The prequalification allows international donor agencies, such as UNICEF and Gavi, to procure the vaccine for low-income countries that lack their own regulatory approvals.

Health authorities emphasize that while vaccines are crucial, they must be integrated with robust public education campaigns, enhanced testing, and contact tracing. Addressing the root causes of transmission and strengthening local healthcare systems remain key priorities in overcoming the global health crisis.
